California has a statewide mattress stewardship program, so landfill disposal is not the only route. The best option depends on whether you are receiving a new mattress, can transport the old one, live in the City of Manteca service area, and need removal from inside the property.
Compare the four main options
| Option | Best when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Retailer take-back | A new mattress is being delivered | Confirm delivery type, scheduling, and the condition rules for take-back. |
| Stewardship drop-off | You can transport the mattress safely | Verify the location, hours, quantity limits, and whether the unit must be dry and free of infestation. |
| Manteca bulky-item pickup | You qualify for city residential service and can follow curb placement rules | Request and confirm the pickup through the city before placing anything outside. |
| Private full-service removal | The mattress is indoors, upstairs, awkward to move, or part of a larger load | Disclose size, stairs, condition, and whether a box spring or frame is included. |
California retailer take-back is worth asking about
CalRecycle states that retailers delivering a new mattress to a California consumer must offer to take back a used mattress at no additional charge. The process differs when delivery is by a common carrier, so arrange it with the retailer instead of assuming the delivery crew can take the old unit on the spot. See CalRecycle’s retailer take-back requirements.
Manteca residents may have a municipal option
The City of Manteca’s 2026 waste-app introduction says residents can request one free bulky-item pickup per year, subject to confirmation by the Solid Waste office. That program may be the better choice when you qualify, can meet placement rules, and do not need interior carrying. Check current terms directly with the city because eligibility and scheduling are municipal decisions. Read the City of Manteca program notice.
Preparation checklist
- Confirm the pickup before moving the mattress outside.
- Keep it dry. Do not leave it exposed to weather while waiting for an unconfirmed date.
- Tell the provider about bed bugs or other infestation before they arrive.
- Clear the route and measure tight doors, landings, and stair turns.
- Include the box spring, frame, and adjustable base in the item list.
- Do not attempt a solo carry if the mattress blocks your view or cannot be safely controlled.
For an inside pickup or a mattress that is part of a larger clearout, review mattress removal and call with the size, condition, and access notes.
